On Tuesday, May 26, Kingston City Council will receive a delegation from the Kingston Community Day of Action. Community Co-chair Natalie Mehra and Labour Co-chair Charlie Stock will request that City Council pass a resolution of endorsement for the Day of Action and proclaim June 8 as the Kingston Day of Action.

"The big question Tuesday evening will be whether Kingston City Council will pass the resolution we are asking them to consider," says Community Co-chairperson Natalie Mehra. "We believe that Kingston City Council will take seriously their responsibility to represent all the people of Kingston, not just the well-off and some wealthy special interests."

Labour Co-chairperson Charlie Stock says, "Nothing speaks louder than local unhappiness over taxation unfairness. No matter what the political leanings of city councillors, they recognize the additional tax burden this government=s downloading of services is placing on everyone who pays municipal taxes. Couple this with a loss of services to all members of the community and you realize why a majority of communities across this province have endorsed local Days of Action."

The resolution the Day of Action organizers are asking City Hall to consider follows:

WHEREAS, the City of Kingston, stands in full support of the rights of its citizens to free assembly for the purpose of political education and political expression, and
WHEREAS, Kingston has itself felt the effects of provincial downloading of costs, and
WHEREAS, Kingston City Council shares the concern of citizens who are alarmed at the speed of provincial change, and
WHEREAS, Kingston City Council supports the call for the provincial government to be more consultative with those institutions, services, and individuals, affected by its actions, and,
WHEREAS, Kingston City Council has itself not been consulted on issues affecting its operation and services,

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED THAT Kingston City Council supports the June 8th, 1998 Day of Action as a peaceful political expression of the rights of all citizens to be heard in a democracy, and

PROCLAIMS June 8, 1998 as the Kingston Day of Action

Community co-chairs Charlie Stock and Natalie Mehra will be available for interviews at City Hall.
