KINGSTON COMMUNITY AGENCIES TAKE UPRECEDENTED STEP - UNITE PUBLICLY TO SUPPORT KINGSTON COMMUNITY DAY OF ACTION

(Kingston) In an unprecedented move, Kingston community agencies announced their support for the Kingston Community Day of Action. Fourteen agencies sent representatives this morning to a media conference publicizing their support for the Day of Action and outlining the reasons for their support.

Natalie Mehra, Community Co-Chairperson of the Kingston Community Day of Action says, AThe active, public support of community agencies for this Day of Action is unprecedented. We are so proud of their courageous and ethical stand on behalf of the people they serve.

AToday, we heard representatives from a whole range of community non-profit agencies describing the awful pressures that they face: decreasing resources and increasing need; legislation that directly and negatively impacts the communities they represent. The anger in the room was palpable and well-justified."

Non-profit agencies are usually afraid to publicize such support because they fear reprisals from corporate and government supporters. The agencies able to attend the news conference included:

Association of Injured Workers
Dawn House
Disabled Women United for Change
HIV/AIDs Regional Services
Home Base Housing
John Howard Society
Kingston Community Information Centre
Kingston Community Legal Clinic
Kingston Co-op Homes
Kingston Interval House
Partners in Mission Food Bank
Rising Heights Hot Meal Program
Sexual Assault Crisis Centre

There are many others who are actively supporting the Day of Action but were unable to attend. On June 8, community agencies will be maintaining crisis services or skeleton staff. Many have come forward to say that they are closing. Others are allowing their staff to participate without reprisals. Many are actively encouraging their members and clients to join in the events of the day. Agencies have made banners and will be gathering to march together.
